The credibility of the Scottish Greens is under increasing pressure as the genuine fragility of the prospectus for Scottish independence becomes ever more transparent.
For Argyll has said from the early days that the most impressive performer, bar none, in the pro-indy ‘Yes’ campaign has been Patrick Harvie of the Scottish Green Party, which supports the ‘Yes’ campaign.
Mr Harvie’s integrity has been a redemptive feature of a shoddy campaign, where that commodity has been in very short supply.
In the various television appearances he has made, he has invariably been the most worth listening to. He has never uttered the tediously repetitive slogans of the campaign. He has been lucid, logical, persuasive and honest.
This is a party whose integrity and probity matter profoundly.
They have to be clear that in this campaign they are NOT supporting the notion of independence.
They are putting their name to THIS version of independence; to THIS prospectus for independence; on THESE grounds; on THESE assurances; with THESE promises; to happen NOW.
If the Scottish Greens can genuinely put their credibility on the line in support for THIS proposition, for which the country will vote on 18th September [some on the back of trusting the Greens], they should formally reaffirm this full and specific support now.
If they cannot stand behind what is being put to the country by the ‘Yes’ campaign prospectus; behind the increasing totalitarianism that is literally being enacted to shape Scotland, independent or not; and behind the bullying and intimidation – of which they are very well aware – of those with alternative views, they should publicly withdraw their support from this independence campaign now.
To delay would fundamentally be to deceive.
There will be political life after 18th September, whatever happens.
The Greens, like the other parties on all sides, will have to answer then for the specifics of what they support and promote now.
